F. Jay Harrell's Aug. 21 letter ignores several very important facts. If the entire supply estimated to be in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge could be made immediately available it would last the United States six months at the most. As it is, it will take approximately 40 years before the field would be in full production.
Most importantly, more oil would be saved if the Republican Party had not reversed or vetoed every law designed to reduce gasoline consumption by Americans. In fact, the Republican Congress made it illegal for the Environmental Protection Agency to fund, support or conduct any research into methods of increasing gasoline mileage in American cars.
If Mr. Harrell does not like the price of gasoline or the amount of money going to foreign countries for oil, perhaps he should contact his Republican government officials.
