Letter: Thankfully, Lieberman has right to run again

I had to respond to the letter from Larry Burgess in Friday's Sun. In his letter, Mr. Burgess states, "Sen. Joe Lieberman doesn't get it. He received a clear message from the voters of Connecticut this past Tuesday, but so far he's chosen to ignore the message."
Is Mr. Burgess suggesting that Sen. Lieberman doesn't get the message because he chooses to exercise his right to run for office? Or does Mr. Burgess think that because the very few members of one political party that turned out to vote in a primary election managed to choose another candidate, that such a vote represents the entire state of Connecticut?
Sen. Lieberman has ably represented his state for over 20 years in Congress, the last 12 as a senator. It may very well be that a majority of Connecticut's voters would like him to continue to do so, despite the wishes of those who happened to vote in the Democratic primary.
Lieberman has never been one to blindly follow the "party line" and was even chosen as the Democrat's vice presidential candidate in 2000 because he appealed to the more conservative voters than his running mate.
Let the people of Connecticut decide if they want this man to represent them. But don't decry his decision to allow them that choice. Instead, give thanks that we live in a country where anyone qualified has the right to run for office and let all the people choose.
