John Katsilometes on an idea whose time (maybe) has come: John Tesh headlining a gospel brunch at Wynn Las Vegas

Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006 | 7:01 a.m.

Coming soon: Gospel Brunch with John Tesh at Wynn Las Vegas.

Far-fetched? The pairing of gospel music and soul food with the person once known as the Whitest Man in America might seem as such. But Tesh provides a persuasive account as to how this could, in fact, happen.

"I have talked to Steve Wynn about doing a deal once a month," Tesh said Monday during a phone interview from his office in Sherman Oaks, Calif. "I know it sounds weird - I'm 6-6 and white and I'm kind of a sleepy piano guy. But I could get people like (gospel artists) Fred Hammond, Kirk Franklin and Shirley Caesar involved and it would be great."

To further enhance this proposition, Tesh has been brought in by Wynn to perform at private VIP parties at Wynn Las Vegas, and Tesh's wife, Connie Selleca, is a friend of Elaine Wynn.

"Who knows?" he said. "But we have been in contact, yes."

Tesh has remained prominent in Las Vegas with "The John Tesh Radio Show" (aka "Intelligence for Your Life"), which last week landed at KJUL 104.7-FM after moving from KSTJ 102.7-FM (which has moved Kelly Hawkins into the nighttime spot formerly occupied by Tesh). The standard format at KJUL should be more friendly to Tesh's rapid-fire, random advice-driven program than the '80s format, where listeners tune in primarily to wax nostalgic over the Romantics and Soft Cell. "Some formats just don't work," Tesh said. "Listeners tell me that the music is just a palate cleanser to get to the next news item."

Tesh is astonishingly popular across the country, being carried by about 240 affiliates nationwide. We'll close with a couple of classic tidbits assembled by his crack 10-person research team: Always wear blue to important meetings (it is a subversively powerful color), throw dishwashing sponges (a haven for germ breeding) into the dishwasher or microwave oven for sanitizing every other day, and the amount of time one should spend brushing his (own) teeth is the same duration of the song, "Yellow Submarine."

Folks involved in the world of Spandex entertainment are dropping the name Moses Pendelton as being a chief figure in the revitalization of "Le Reve" at Wynn Las Vegas. That's a huge name to drop. Pendelton is a renowned choreographer, one of the founders of the dance-theater company Pilobolus in 1971 and the founder of Momix in 1981. Those companies introduced the blending of dance, theater, acrobatics, gymnastics and illusion for which Cirque du Soleil has become famous. His credits also include work with opera companies, on film and the choreography of closing ceremonies of the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid.

The new condo/loft development L5 (which is a sister condo project to Loft 5 at Las Vegas Boulevard South and Pebble Road, just across the boulevard and a bit south of the Bootlegger Bistro) is holding a contest inviting Las Vegas locals to star in its upcoming TV commercials set to air in September. L5 is seeking residents to tell their best tales of sibling rivalry (that's to tie in with the "sister" theme, you see) and the individual(s) with the best saga not only stars in the commercial, but will be awarded a loft at L5 valued up to $250,000. The contest is set for 8 p.m. Thursday at Tao at the Venetian; you must be age 21 or older to enter

What is being touted as "the world's first and only training video for Elvis impersonators," called "Sing Like the King," is being released Wednesday, the 29th anniversary of Elvis Presley's (alleged) death. The how-to video was produced by Blue Suede Films and Elvis impersonation expert John Paget, and teaches performers and would-be performers how to sing and shout and move their hips about. There seems to be a market - more than 35,000 Elvis impressionists are working worldwide

One of the lesser-known dicey challenges for motorists on the Strip is the Flamingo Las Vegas entrance. Drivers heading northbound cut into the valet-self parking entrance and are almost instantly met by tourists blithely walking (or, more accurately, waddling) in a kind of pedestrian black hole between the Flamingo and O'Sheas. There is no traffic light for either drivers or waddlers to work off, so you really have to be prepared to break quickly, lest you want a tourist carrying a pink plastic commemorative Margaritaville tumbler splayed across the hood of your Mazda

A restaurant to see, and be seen in, Social House above Tangerine at Treasure Island is now taking reservations (894-7777) . The restaurant (alliteratively a sushi, sake and social hangout) is operated by the impossibly hip Pure Management Group and is taking reservations for Aug. 31 and beyond

That $19.95 ticket price mentioned in Sunday's column for "Rock Show" on Sept. 22 at the Las Vegas Hilton is off - if you see an ad or listing with that price, ignore it. The ticket prices for the production are $48.96 and $59.96, with all the service charges and half-taxes and over-taxes and all that other stuff added
