Letter: Not enough good news being reported
Sunday, Aug. 13, 2006 | 7:32 a.m.
All over the media we see or hear news about prisoner abuse, rape and other atrocities on unarmed civilians committed by a few bad apples of the armed forces in Iraq.
While the need to know is valid as claimed by the members of the Fourth Estate, it does not transcend their obligation to bring to us many of the good deeds these brave young men and women have done or are doing.
Other than the one Congressional Medal of Honor, are any of our fighting men and women decorated with the Bronze Star, Silver Star or Distinguish Service Cross, etc.? We form our opinions of the war by reading the newspapers and watching the television news. All we get are two differing views of the news, the mainstream media on one side, Fox News spin and right-wing newspaper accounts on the other side.
Do we remember that these brave young men and women are going through "hell" fighting a faceless enemy on Memorial Day or the Fourth of July only? Who are our heroes from Nevada, and what are they doing? There is a truism, depressing but accurate, that "most news is bad news." It doesn't have to be!
