Letter: Senators did a great job on wilderness

After reading Launce Rake's Aug. 3 article on the new public lands bill for White Pine County, I am pleased to know that Sens. Harry Reid and John Ensign have done it again.

They have worked with local community leaders and a variety of people throughout the state to come up with a public lands bill that makes sense. The recently introduced White Pine Public Lands Bill, as reported in the Sun, shows that the senators are trying to help our rural counties grow economically and also to preserve our public lands.

I am excited to see that Great Basin National Park will get more protection and that other places will be protected as wilderness. I was disappointed to read that the Kern Mountains were not included and that the South Egan Range is divided, allowing roads to encroach on the wilderness.

As someone who travels to White Pine County to recreate in the summer months and escape the heat of Las Vegas, I am happy to know that once this bill passes that there will always be beautiful places up there to enjoy. Good work, senators!
