CARSON CITY - Three years after tiles started falling off the side of the Sawyer State Office Building, officials have approved a $7.6 million contract to repair the problem.
The job was awarded to Western Tile & Marble Construction Co. of Las Vegas, which expects to finish the work in nine months.
To protect passers-by from the falling tiles, the walkway leading to the entrance was covered with a temporary roof and webbing was wrapped around parts of the building to contain the falling tile. There have been no injuries.
Because of the tile problem, the state is seeking damages from the general contractor, the tile contractor and the architect connected with the construction of the building in 1997.
About two years ago, the state spent $700,000 to correct an odor problem that affected employees at the building at 555 E. Washington Ave., Las Vegas.
