Letter: ‘Golden parachutes’ manufactured by greed
Monday, April 24, 2006 | 7:19 a.m.
The pages of the business news of our daily newspapers are replete with stories heralding the "golden parachutes" given to retiring CEOs, the latest one being the $400 million package granted Lee Raymond by Exxon Mobil.
His rebuttal is: Look what I have done for Exxon Mobil shareholders. It does not seem to bother him that he has made it through exorbitant price gouging at the gas pump. Price gouging that has made it more difficult for those at the lower end and middle of the economic spectrum to make ends meet.
His defense of his "golden parachute" is nauseating. This is an epitome of a career based on avarice and outright vulgar greed.
If one takes the Bible literally, he and his ilk are in deep trouble. Christ said in Matthew 18:24: "It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
