Letter: Those who pay most deserve a break
Wednesday, April 19, 2006 | 7:23 a.m.
In reading Paul Krugman's commentary of April 17, I think his numbers of 53 percent of tax reductions going to the top 1 percent of taxpayers and 40 percent (after elimination of the estate tax) going to the top 10 percent are probably nearly correct.
However, one fact that he and others who think like him always fail to mention is that the top 10 percent of earners also pay upward of 80 percent of all personal income taxes (not corporate or business).
Could it be that to address such information might lead us to think that we are fast becoming the Socialist States of America, wherein those who pay the taxes do not get any tax reduction, because the money has to go to those who get food stamps, welfare and their medical care at the county emergency room?
Why should those who pay the most not get any tax breaks?
