Letter: Willing to give up privacy for security

Monday, April 17, 2006 | 7:25 a.m.

I'm in favor of a high-tech National ID card, with a photograph and fingerprint image, that could also serve as a Social Security card. The card would show citizenship or immigrant status, and be used for employment and government services eligibility.

If we had the card, I wouldn't worry much about porous borders, because without the card you can't work, get a driver's license, cash a check, open a bank account, use public transportation, vote, register children in school or use any government services.

Loss of privacy? I don't care. Our privacy has declined steadily since the advent of computers and declines faster as technology progresses. Anyway, the nation's security and economic well-being should take priority over privacy issues.
