Letter: Children reinforce faith in schools

The 2nd annual Ruthe Deskin Day, an April 7 event at the Deskin Elementary School celebrating my dear friend Ruthe, who passed away in 2004, gave me a new appreciation of our Clark County school system.

The Deskin Elementary School - kindergarten through 5th grade - is being taught self-discipline, respectfulness, integrity, neighborliness and goal-setting. The students saluted the flag with the help of Cub Scout Pack 838. I felt so proud to be there with Ruthe's daughter, Terry. The large student body, all the teachers and the principal, Amy Yacobovsky, eagerly and happily celebrated their namesake, Ruthe, for she truly was an inspiration to all who knew her.

Ruthe, who was the longtime assistant to the publisher of the Las Vegas Sun, would have been so happy to hear them recite their poems and essays. The bright little faces sang every verse of our state song, "Home Means Nevada." Ruthe was a native Nevadan who loved her state.

Yes, I have renewed faith in the schools and the youth of our nation - especially schools that have dedicated principals like Mrs. Yacobovsky to guide them. Ruthe would be so proud!
