Letter: Gates help make homeowners feel safe

As president of the Pinehurst Homeowners' Association in Henderson, I felt the need to respond to your April 2 article, "Storming the gates - cities consider limiting or even banning walls, gated communities":

We have one-story and two-story homes in our development. A great number of senior citizens occupy the one-story homes and they feel a tremendous sense of security with our gate.

If someone chooses to go for a walk outside of the development, when they return they simply key in their access code and the center gate opens up and allows them entrance back into the community.

The main purpose for our gate is simply security for our homeowners. Granted it is not perfect, as someone could drive in behind a resident opening the gate for access, and follow the resident into the community. We have had repeated reminders at meetings alerting residents of the dangers of permitting someone entrance who is not a resident of our development.

Connectivity and the ability to easily walk to places are wonderful things, however the dangers of robbers, vandalism and home invasions are still a reality in our society. We cannot bury our heads in the sand and think these problems are just going to "go away" - they are not. With the influx and numbers of people from various states moving to our city, the need for security is enhanced.
