In the annals of political stupidity, saying a scheduled June 2 detonation at the Nevada Test Site would produce a "mushroom cloud" over Las Vegas has to rank high. Even sillier, James Tegnelia, chief of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, prefaced his comment by saying, "I don't want to sound glib here." Now how could he sound glib with such idiocy? Perhaps he needs to reduce the threat of his mouth opening again. The reflexive outrage by our congressional delegation may not have been as dumb, but it was certainly predictable and equally silly. They had been notified long ago and none of them seemed so eager to demand the blast be stopped after Tegnelia's comment. Thanks for nothing.
