North Las Vegas City Council Briefs

Thursday, Sept. 29, 2005 | 9:31 a.m.

Input is sought on regional park

North Las Vegas is seeking community input on the development of the Craig Ranch Regional Park.

An online survey has been posted on the city's Web site at www.cityofnorthlasvegas.com.

The survey will give city officials ideas on what should be included in the 132-acre park.

North Las Vegas announced in March it had acquired the Craig Ranch Golf Course for $52 million.

City to pay $45,000 to settle claim

North Las Vegas has agreed to pay $45,000 to settle a claim of a 40-year-old man whose vehicle was rear-ended by a police officer in September 2004.

By agreeing to pay the claim of Charles Brooks of North Las Vegas, the city avoids further litigation costs any obligation of paying additional attorney's fees at trial, said Robert Freeman, a Henderson-based lawyer who represented North Las Vegas.

Brooks was driving south on Martin Luther King Boulevard when he stopped at a stop sign at Hassell Street and was rear-ended by a police officer, Freeman said.

As a result of the impact, Brooks' vehicle hit the vehicle in front of it. He was taken to UMC where he was treated for back pain, cervical sprains and soft tissue injuries, Freeman said.

Brooks incurred $15,710 in medical expenses, he said.

A police report said the officer, who was not on any type of pursuit or call at the time, followed Brooks' vehicle too closely, Freeman said.

Contract renewed for city lobbyist

North Las Vegas renewed a contract of a Las Vegas firm to serve as the city's lobbyist in Carson City.

Henderson & Associates will earn $119,322 for the contract that starts at the end of September and runs through July 31, 2007. This is a much longer contract than a previous one that ran from July 2004 through July 2005.

The firm will be paid more than $74,000 for pre-session work through January 2007 and $40,000 for the 2007 session that runs from February through June. It will also be paid $4,666 for July 2007.

In March, North Las Vegas extended a contract with a lobbying firm to help obtain federal funds and other assistance at the federal level. The Las Vegas-based firm, Lionel, Sawyer & Collins is paid $12,500 a month, plus up to $5,000 a month for phone, mail and other expenses.

Travel restricted on Donovan Way

As part of the Laurel Canyon off-site sewer pipeline project, Donovan Way between Craig Road and Ann Road will be restricted to one lane of travel, starting Monday and continuing for eight weeks.

Traffic lanes in the construction zone will be limited to a single lane. In an effort to minimize the inconvenience to traffic and local businesses, the crew will be working 24 hours a day, seven days a week, city officials said.

Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes to avoid traffic delays.

The sewer work is a private project.
