Danny Gans Run for Rainforest set
The third annual Danny Gans Run for the Rainforest event will begin at 8 a.m. Oct. 22 at the Henderson Multi-Generational Center, 250 S. Green Valley Parkway.
The purpose of the event is to raise funds for the John C. Vanderburg Elementary School Rainforest Biosphere. The 3,200 square-foot hands-on science laboratory is the first of its kind to be constructed at an elementary school in the United States.
The event will offer live entertainment from Tommy Rocker and his band, raffle prizes, food and Southwest Airline tickets will be awarded to the top finishers. Medals will also be given in each age group, and in the wheelchair and stroller divisions.
Support and donations help fund the operational, inhabitant, and educational needs of the Biosphere. For more information about the run, contact Carolyn Battin at 4801917.
Children can play Pumpkin Picassos
The Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Drive, is hosting Pumpkin Picassos from 11 a.m.-noon (ages 4-7) and from 1-2 p.m. (ages 8-12) Oct. 22. Registration is $3 per person by Oct. 16, and each child should bring an old shirt and a pumpkin to the event. Pumpkin Picassos sponsored by the Henderson Parks and Recreation Department.
The event provides a safe alternative to Halloween pumpkin carving for youth. Staff members will be on hand to assist youth as they paint their own pumpkin creations. Youth may take part in a variety of games after painting is complete.
Registration is accepted at any Henderson recreation center, by mail, or online at cityofhenderson.com. For additional information, call 267-5850.
'Idol' auditions at the District
The District at Green Valley Ranch and KVVU TV-5 are offering a special American Idol contest on Saturday to win a "Skip the Line" pass and a guaranteed audition for "American Idol's" fifth season auditions, which will be held in Las Vegas Oct. 10.
Because of Hurricane Katrina, the Memphis auditions were canceled and Las Vegas was added as the final city in which auditions will be held.
Registration will be from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the FOX 5 booth near the sculpture courtyard. Registrants must be Nevada residents and between the ages of 16 to 28 as of Aug. 15. The first 250 registrants will be guaranteed an opportunity to participate in the FOX 5 contest, but no one is allowed to line up prior to 10 a.m. on Saturday.
From 1-4 p.m., contestants will perform for the FOX 5 judges and at 4 p.m. five finalists will be announced. The five finalists will perform on "FOX 5 This Morning" Oct. 5.
