Letter: Selective Service registration is not voluntary

I want to thank Don McDonald for his Sept. 20 letter to the editor, in which he criticized the fact that the sons and daughters of wealthy, powerful and politically connected people are virtually exempt from military service. I could not have expressed that point any better.
I have a son, an only child who just turned 18. Within one week of his birthday, we received a postcard telling him he must sign up for Selective Service, and if he didn't, he would be charged with a felony.
Wow! So much for the land of the free. If the military is truly voluntary, why is it a felony if he doesn't register? Register, or go to jail (what was his crime?).
Why is President Bush not leading by example, and sending his own children into the military? Then, and only then, would I feel he was a true patriot and believed in his war. May God continue to bless America.
