Harrah’s will continue to pursue casino plans

Friday, Sept. 23, 2005 | 9:57 a.m.

The state Supreme Court issued an advisory opinion saying plans for the casino could violate the state constitution. The constitution requires lotteries in Rhode Island to be state-run.

"We are reading the Supreme Court decision and making determinations on which way we want to go," Jones told The Providence Journal. "But at this moment, we don't see this as an endgame necessarily at all."

Jones also reacted to Senate President Joseph Montabano's statement that the court decision could be fatal to Harrah's plans. He said it could open the door to competitive bidding on the casino license Harrah's has been seeking in partnership with the Narragansett Indian tribe.

Jones said that was unlikely.

"How do you competitively bid when there is no location, the state doesn't own the property, and the town -- by statute or constitution -- has to approve a casino?" she asked.
