Funds approved for NLV vets hospital

WASHINGTON -- The Senate on Thursday approved $199 million for construction of the new veterans hospital planned for North Las Vegas as part of a military construction projects bill.

The House already approved the money as part of its spending bill this year and House-Senate negotiators will meet to work out differences between the two versions.

Nevada Sens. Harry Reid and John Ensign took credit for securing the money. Minority Leader Reid sits on the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Groundbreaking on the new Veterans Administration hospital to be constructed near the Las Vegas beltway and Pecos Road is planned for next year with possible completion in 2009. Plans call for a 90-bed hospital, 120-bed nursing home and outpatient clinic.
