LV Council approves facility for 33 horses in northwest

Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005 | 9:18 a.m.

A proposal to put a commercial corral and stables for up to 33 horses in northwest Las Vegas was unanimously approved by the City Council on Wednesday.

Some neighbors had objected to the plan, saying they were concerned about the smell and flies that could accompany a group of animals.

Councilman Steve Ross said the issue put him in the unusual position of being asked to protect residential development from expanding rural land uses.

"Usually I'm hearing from the rural trying to stop the encroachment of development on them," said Ross, who lives in the neighborhood where the corral and stables are planned.

The council voted 7-0 to allow Nancy Estocado to build the corral and stables on nearly 5 acres on the northwest corner of La Madre Way and Leon Avenue, which is off Jones Boulevard north of Lone Mountain Road.

There are already two properties close to Estocado's with horses, including one commercial stables.

Estocado's plan was opposed by several residents of the Los Prados development, a gated community surrounding its own golf course in which some homes back up to Leon Avenue across from Estocado's land.

Los Prados resident Ted Bracke spoke against Estocado's request at the Wednesday council meeting.

"People and horses just don't mix," he said.

Estocado told the council that she has held two meetings with her neighbors to discuss her proposal. Also, she trimmed her original plans in an effort to please concerned neighbors. Estocado, who has five horses of her own already on her property, said she originally wanted to have 60 horses and roping steers. But she said concern from neighbors prompted her to cut the steers from her plan.
