Letter: Park’s passive nature must be preserved by city

Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005 | 9:19 a.m.

Floyd Lamb State Park contains approximately 2,000 acres. Much of it is outside of the fencing and leased from the Bureau of Land Management. All of it is used for passive recreation. We have many city parks that provide fields, courts and rinks for competitive sports. Gov. Kenny Guinn is correct -- it is a phenomenal park and does need maintenance and improvements. But he is not correct about making it more of a city park. In fact, there are two city parks just a short distance away on Elkhorn Road and Buffalo Drive.

This town needs to retain wilderness and desert for people to enjoy. I'm not embarrassed to say that I am an active and concerned citizen, asking other community members to realize what we will lose if Floyd Lamb State Park is sold to the city of Las Vegas, and, subsequently, the city sells most of the land to developers. Once it is gone, it is gone.

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman assured me, in person, in his own office, that Floyd Lamb will remain a passive-use park. I believe him and know that he, along with the City Council, will do the right thing and keep all of the park as it is, with mature trees, ponds and open land to hike and ride upon.
