Six School Board applicants disqualified

Six of the 23 applicants for a vacant seat on the Clark County School Board do not meet the residency requirement and will be disqualified, School District officials said Monday.
Denise Brodsky, who represented District E in the northwest Las Vegas Valley, resigned in August. The remaining six School Board members will appoint her replacement, who will serve until the next general election in fall 2006.
The home addresses of all of the applicants were checked against the district's own zoning maps as well as with the county Elections Department, officials said.
The applicants were being notified by telephone late Monday and a written letter was expected to follow.
The individuals believed to have been eliminated from contention are: retired medical school administrator Marcia Barrett; Las Vegas Planning Commission member Byron Goynes; Micki Jay, a retired dance teacher; Andrew McGee, a retired business consultant; J.C. O'Brien, a 10-year resident of Clark County; and Madelyn Olds, a retired public school teacher.
At its regular meeting Thursday the School Board will determine the process for interviewing applicants at a public meeting set for Sept. 29.
