Rebels score another draw
For the third time in the past four games, the UNLV women's soccer team played to a draw, this time tying Long Beach State 1-1 in double overtime Sunday at the Adidas Classic at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
Tanya Roberts scored in the 28th minute on an assist from Armani Rice for the Rebels (3-2-3).
Russia beats France for Fed Cup title
At Paris, Russia won the Fed Cup for the second consecutive year Sunday, with the doubles team of Elena Dementieva and Dinara Safina beating France's Amelie Mauresmo and Mary Pierce 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 for a 3-2 victory.
Dementieva sank to her knees in celebration after Mauresmo hit a forehand long on match point at Roland Garros. Russia beat two-time champion France 3-2 in the final last year in Moscow.
In earlier singles matches, Pierce rallied past Anastasia Myskina 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to even the best-of-five final at 2-2. Dementieva defeated Mauresmo in the opener 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
The 2006 French Open will start Sunday, May 28 and run until Sunday, June 11, extending the Paris tournament to 15 days, the French Tennis Federation said in a statement. The Open is usually held over 14 days like the three other Grand Slam events.
Deputy Commander colt sold for $420,000
At Lexington, Ky., a son of Deputy Commander brought the top price of $420,000 during Sunday's session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
Angelo Ferro bought the bay colt out of unraced Clever Squaw, by Rahy. Deputy Commander is also the sire of Travers Stakes winner Ten Most Wanted.
Keeneland sold 293 horses on Sunday for $20,642,500, an average price of $70,452 with a median of $55,000. During the comparable sale last year, 258 horses sold for $16,487,000, an average of $63,903 with a median of $50,500.
Through six days of the 14-day auction, 1,484 horses have sold for $322,296,500, already the second highest gross in the sale's history. The average price so far is $217,181 with a median of $110,000.
Game postponed after parent threatens coach
At Parsippany, N.J., a high school football game was postponed after a parent threatened one of the coaches for benching his son.
Robert Stanel was charged with making terroristic threats toward coach Parsippany coach Gerry Moore. Stanel's son, Joe, was benched for being five minutes late that morning.
The threat was made in Moore's office, just before the Parsippany team was to make the bus trip to West Caldwell for Saturday's game against West Essex Regional.
According to police, Stanel threatened to kill Moore. Stanel denied that, but told The Sunday Star-Ledger of Newark he told Moore he would "come looking for him later."
"I work construction," the 44-year-old Stanel told the newspaper. "This is just the way we talk. It's a wake-up call."
There was no physical contact between the men, police said. Stanel turned himself in after Parsippany Municipal Court Judge Anthony Frese issued a warrant for his arrest and police contacted him at his home. Stanel was later released on $2,500 bail.
West Essex officials decided to postpone the game until Sunday.
