Dental program will help those in need
The UNLV Dental School has teamed up with local oral health associations for the 1-Day Dental Program, a volunteer effort that provides cost-free care to Southern Nevada residents in need.
The event will be from 9 a.m. 1 p.m. Saturday at the UNLV Dental School, 1001 Shadow Lane, near Charleston and Martin Luther King boulevards.
The program is a collaborative, volunteer effort between UNLV, the Nevada Dental Association, Southern Nevada Dental Society and Community Coalition for Oral Health, providing preventive and comprehensive restorative oral health care to qualifying Nevada residents free of charge.
To be eligible, residents must be between the ages of 1 and 18 and have no access to oral health care. Individuals are scheduled for appointments after they qualify for the program. For more information, call 732-2450.
Nellis to celebrate with retirees
Nellis Air Force Base will host its Retiree Appreciation Day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Thunderbirds hangar.
Retirees from all services and their guests are welcome to attend the free event.
Activities include informational booths, entertainment, a multi-media presentation, tours of the Threat Training Facility, static displays, and door prize drawings.
Retirees also will be able to renew their identification cards and vehicle passes. Lunch will be provided.
Fundraiser planned to fight obesity
The third annual Walk From Obesity fundraiser will begin with registration at 8 a.m., followed by the walk at 9 Sept. 24 at Bruce Trent Park, Rampart Boulevard and Vegas Drive in northwestern Las Vegas.
The fund-raising event is designed to reduce disability, death and discrimination of people who are obese by educating the public and health care professionals about effective treatments.

Buddy Walk helps Down syndrome
The fifth annual Buddy Walk organized by the Down Syndrome Organization of Southern Nevada and the National Down Syndrome Society will begin at 4 p.m. Sept. 24 at Discovery Park in Henderson.
The event will begin with a reading of the Proclamation of Down Syndrome Awareness Month. The walkers will be able to stop along the paths to visit with community vendors, who will be expressing their acceptance and support for persons and their families affected by Down Syndrome.

The Thai Las Vegas Association
presents the Thai Festival 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Tuesday at Thai Town Center, 1201 Las Vegas Blvd., South. The event will feature Thai food, crafts, products and dancing. Admission is free. For more information, call 336-6531 or 633-3345.
