Man hit by truck while running from store with stolen beer

Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2005 | 11:18 a.m.

A 22-year-old man was critically injured Tuesday night when he was hit by a pickup truck while running away from a convenience store with a stolen 12-pack of Budweiser, Metro Police said.

Glenn Roybal Jr. was hit by a 1991 Toyota SR5 on Vegas Drive just east of Decatur Boulevard about 8:20 p.m., Metro Sgt. Tracy McDonald said.

When emergency responders arrived at the scene they found Roybal with the 12-pack still in his hand, even though he was "intertwined with the wheel of the Toyota," McDonald said.

"(Roybal) was basically running from the scene of a crime" when he was hit, McDonald said.

He said Roybal was in critical condition early this morning.

"A lot of his person was left at the scene," McDonald said.

The driver of the truck, 32-year-old Bonifacio Garcia, was cited for driving without a license and because he did not have his vehicle registration and proof of insurance, but McDonald said it didn't appear that Garcia was at fault for the collision.

Just prior to the collision, Roybal had been in a nearby convenience store with several other people, Metro spokesman Jose Montoya said.

Montoya said one person who had been with Roybal in the store allegedly punched the convenience store clerk. The alleged attacker was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center but his name and age were not available this morning.

A few hours later on Tuesday, a man was killed in another pedestrian-traffic collision that may have been avoided if the victim had used a marked crosswalk, Metro police said.

A 41-year-old man, Scott Cross, was killed at Tropicana Avenue and Valley View Boulevard about 11:20 p.m. when he attempted to cross Tropicana about 40 feet from a crosswalk and was struck by a vehicle that may have been speeding, McDonald said.

"In both circumstances there was a crosswalk within 70 feet," McDonald said. "If both individuals took a few minutes to use a designated crosswalk there is a strong probability that these accidents wouldn't have occurred."

Cross was killed when he was attempting to cross Tropicana from the north to the south side, Metro reported. A Chevrolet Impala driven by Jenkins Darvise, 29, was traveling eastbound when it stuck him, Metro reported.

Darvise was driving with a suspended license and Metro is also investigating for a possible speeding infraction, McDonald said.

Cross was taken to UMC Trauma and died about 40 minutes after the accident, Metro reported.
