Death of Red Sox fan results in no charges

No criminal charges will be brought against the officers involved in the fatal shooting of a college student at a raucous celebration by Red Sox fans last fall, prosecutors said Monday.

"There is no evidence that any officer on Lansdowne Street acted with any intent to commit a crime," Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley said at a news conference.

Victoria Snelgrove, a 21-year-old Emerson College student, was shot in the eye socket with a pepper-spray pellet outside Fenway Park on Oct. 21. Officers were trying to calm the crowd that had filled the streets following Boston's victory over the New York Yankees to win the American League pennant.

NHL signs with XM Satellite Radio

The NHL announced a 10-year, $100 million deal with XM Satellite Radio that begins this season and will make XM the league's exclusive satellite radio broadcast partner beginning with the 2007-2008 season.

XM will broadcast more than 1,000 games a season -- beginning with the Oct. 5 opening this year -- as well as the All-Star game, the Stanley Cup playoffs and the finals.

Despite overwhelming support from player reps during a conference call with the executive board Monday night, Saskin decided to reopen the vote. He wants to end criticism from a small group of players who questioned the process by which Saskin was hired.

Briscoe remains hospitalized

IRL driver Ryan Briscoe, injured in a fiery crash Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway, was transferred from a hospital in Oak Lawn to Indianapolis' Methodist Hospital.

Briscoe, who suffered a concussion, two broken clavicles, a bruised lung and contusions to his arms and legs, will undergo further evaluation and treatment and may remain hospitalized for several days.

The accident occurred on the 20th lap in Turn 3 as contact with Alex Barron sent Briscoe's Target Chip Ganassi car airborne and against the retaining fence.

Ferrero, Moya advance at China Open

At Beijing, Juan Carlos Ferrero rallied from a set down to defeat South Korea's Lee Hyung-Taik 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the first round of the China Open on Monday.

Spain's Carlos Moya stopped Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand 7-6 (6), 6-3 at the Beijing Tennis Center.

Ferrero needed five match points to finish off Lee.

Keeneland sales up 40 percent

Led by industry stalwarts like the Maktoum family and Bob and Beverly Lewis, Keeneland's September Yearling Sale opened with the second highest-grossing session in the sale's 62-year history.

Keeneland sold 188 thoroughbreds for $88,712,000, up 40 percent over the first session of last year's sale. The average price was $471,872, up 27 percent, while the median was $300,000, up 14.3 percent.

United States qualifies for quarterfinals

Jeffrey Deardorff and Benjamin Zobrist each drove in two runs to help the United States beat the Czech Republic 7-3 on Monday, giving the Americans a quarterfinal berth in the Baseball World Cup.
