Woman injured in bedroom fire

A Las Vegas woman received second-degree burns on her legs below the knees after the bed in which she was sleeping caught fire Saturday.

Fire investigators believe the woman fell asleep in bed while smoking shortly before 5:30 p.m. when the fire broke out, said Tim Szymanski, spokesman for Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

The cause of the fire, which caused $50,000 in damage to a home in the 1400 block of Mezpah Drive, was ruled accidental, Szymanski said.

When firefighters arrived they found intense flames and heavy smoke cominig from one window of the one-story wooden-frame home, Szymanski said.

The fire gutted the bedroom and caused smoke and heat damage throughout the house.

Fire investigators believe the woman awoke because of the heat when the bed caught fire and managed to get out of bed. A teenage grandson helped her out of the house, Szymanski said.

She was taken to the hospital for treatment of her burns, Szymanski said.

No one else was injured in the fire.

Two Nevadans get West Nile virus

Two Northern Nevadans were confirmed to have West Nile virus, the Nevada State Health Division reported Friday.

One case of a person over the age of 50 was reported in Churchill County, and the second person, also over 50, is in Lyon County. Both had the less severe form of West Nile fever.

The total number of human cases of West Nile virus in the state is 18. Three cases have been reported in Clark County, one in Nye County and one in Lincoln County.

So far this year public health officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta have reported more than 1,000 West Nile infections caused by mosquito bites.

California has been the state with the most West Nile viruses cases at 521 so far this year, compared to 779 in 2004. That state's cases are slowly declining after a peak in August, the CDC said.
