Commissioners recommend shutting down racetrack

SAN MATEO, Calif. -- The city planning commission will recommend demolishing Bay Meadows race track to make room for housing, shopping and office space.
Commissioners voted late Thursday after more than 15 meetings over the last several months. The final decision will be made by the City Council.
The Bay Meadows and Land Company wants to redevelop the aging 83.5-acre race track into 1,250 residential units, 1.25 million square feet of office space and 150,000 square feet of retail space. The plan also calls for 15 acres of open space.
Built in 1934, Bay Meadows is home to the longest-running stakes event in California, the Bay Meadows Handicap. This race was inaugurated in 1934 and was captured in 1937 and 1938 by the great Seabiscuit, ridden by noted jockey George Woolf.
