Fishing report: Weather and bass remain hot topics

NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE

The size of the stripers being caught picked up somewhat late last week for anglers who were fishing in the Las Vegas Wash area with more fish in the 3-pound range being seen in the catch. One angler did well for stripers recently in the Las Vegas Wash Arm by chumming with corn and using cut anchovies for bait.

Another boater who was downrigging caught several 3-pound stripers and a number that were around two pounds. Jigging has been productive as well. The tires at Lake Mead Marina continue to produce stripers, but most of the fish have been two pounds or less.

Anglers who have been fishing off Hemenway Harbor have had slow fishing and most of the fish that they have caught recently have been thin. This year's threadfin shad spawn in the Overton Arm was the best that has ever been recorded by NDOW and this has given stripers the opportunity to gain weight as they feed on the tiny fish. The result has been healthy stripers and good fishing in that end of the lake.

Boaters who have been fishing at Overton have enjoyed good action for stripers recently at Fish Island, Ann Marguret Cove and Salt Cove. Channel catfish are being caught in Las Vegas Wash and Fish Island by anglers who are using anchovies.

Striped bass fishing remains good around Cottonwood Cove, although most of the fish weigh a pound or less. Drifting anchovies and squid is the best method for catching the fish.
