CCSN president to get $20,000 raise

Community College of Southern Nevada President Richard Carpenter is slated to get a $20,000 pay raise later this month at the urging of university system Chancellor Jim Rogers.

Carpenter has only been on the job for one year, but he's the last of the presidents to see a salary increase. The raises were sparked by the higher than usual salary given to incoming Nevada State College President Fred Maryanski in February 2005.

When Maryanski was brought in with a $225,000 salary, more than UNLV President Carol Harter or UNR President John Lilley made at the time, Rogers said at the time it would be necessary to raise all of the presidents' salaries. accordingly. Maryanski was hired at that amount to recruit him away from his well-paid job at the University of Connecticut.

Almost every president saw a $20,000 or more increase in the last year.

Carpenter's base salary is currently $193,800, The raise will make his salary $213,800. He also gets a $12,000 housing allowance, an $8,000 car allowance and a $5,000 host account.

Carpenter's raise is expected to be approved by the Board of Regents at the Sept. 22-23 meeting at the Desert Research Institute in Las Vegas.

During the same meeting, the Desert Research Institute's foundation is also seeking regent approval to supplement the salary of the institute's president, Stephen Wells.
