The Regional Transportation Commission has set aside hundreds of free bus passes for displaced Gulf Coast residents who began arriving here on Thursday, RTC General Manager Jacob Snow said.
Speaking before the RTC board at its monthly meeting, Snow said the 30-day passes would be made available to the roughly 500 survivors of Hurricane Katrina who started arriving at the Fertitta Community Assistance Center at Catholic Charities' downtown Las Vegas campus.
Clark County officials announced Tuesday that 300 displaced residents were expected to arrive Thursday and another 200 are expected to arrive early next week.
Another 50 daily transit passes will also be set aside for the rescue workers taking part in the free vacations for firefighters, paramedics and police involved in the relief effort, Snow said.
