Local foster care discussions set

Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005 | 9:54 a.m.

Clark County and area religious leaders were expected to convene this afternoon to discuss how to draw in prospective foster parents.

The Interfaith Roundtable discussions began in May after the start of a foster and adoptive parent recruitment campaign. The county Family Services Department has since estimated it has received more than 1,000 inquiries from would-be foster parents.

The department assumed responsibility for more than 2,000 foster children in October, 800 of whom are awaiting legal adoption, officials estimate.

Today's discussion, expected to be led by Commissioners Yvonne Atkinson Gates, Chip Maxfield and Lynette Boggs McDonald, was expected to begin at 3 p.m. in the County Government Center's Pueblo Room.

For more information about foster parenting or adoption, call the county's foster care hotline at 1-800-423-2659.
