Letter: Event shows need for camera in cab
Friday, Sept. 2, 2005 | 9:43 a.m.
The recent incident where the passenger was struck by three cars and killed after leaving a taxi is another reason why cameras should be installed in all cabs. Had there been a camera in this particular cab, there would be irrefutable evidence as to what exactly happened before the woman fled the cab.
Although the Nevada Taxicab Authority has stated that the taxi driver was following his training by pulling over and calling for help, that doesn't mean that family members won't file a lawsuit at some point, putting the blame on the driver and the cab company.
As the wife of a taxi driver, I know that it is not unusual for some passengers to become belligerent and aggressive while riding in a taxi, whether it be from alcohol, drugs or anger at losing their money in a casino. Until the cab companies are willing to pay for cameras, they may find themselves dishing out huge sums in court judgments.
