Three apply for School Board

Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005 | 9:52 a.m.

A college administrator, a retired dance teacher turned conservationist and an insurance agent are seeking appointment to a vacant seat on the Clark County School Board.

With less than two weeks until the Sept. 14 application deadline, the School Board office has received applications from three individuals so far. Denise Brodsky, who was elected in November to a second, four-year term, resigned Aug. 4 to become executive director of a United Way office in Louisiana.

The individual appointed to fill the District E vacancy will serve until the next general election in the fall of 2006. Whoever is elected at that time will serve the remainder of Brodsky's term, which runs through 2008.

The applicants are:

Two other individuals, parent and community advocate Terri Janison and retired substitute teacher Frank Albano, have said they plan to apply for the vacant seat.

Janison, the wife of KLAS Channel 8 senior meteorologist Kevin Janison, has been active in community groups that fought successfully to limit junk food sales to students. Albano, who challenged Brodsky unsuccessfully on last year's primary ballot, was later appointed by her to the district's Attendance Zone Advisory Commission.

Applications must be received by the School Board office no later than 5 p.m. on Sept. 14. Applications may be obtained in person at the School Board office, 2832 E. Flamingo Road, Las Vegas, or online at www.ccsd.net. Applicants must reside within the District E boundaries. A map showing the geographic area may be found at the district's Web site.
