Man’s motion to change sentence refused

Friday, Oct. 28, 2005 | 7:45 a.m.

CARSON CITY -- The Nevada Supreme Court Thursday dismissed the appeal of a Las Vegas man who, irked that his girlfriend had other boyfriends, set a house and a cat on fire.

William S. Manciano, who is now 41 years old, was convicted in 1997 of arson, three counts of attempted murder and maiming or disfiguring another person's animal. He was given a prison term of 10 to 46 years. He was also ordered to pay restitution of $77,250.

Manciano maintained that the order to pay restitution was illegal. But the Supreme Court said the "sentence was facially legal."

Manciano was convicted of setting fire to the home of John and Crystal Manley and their daughter Heather Workman in October 1996. He also lived at the house and apparently was upset because Workman talked to another man outside the house.

No one was injured. He also set fire to one of the Manley's cats, which suffered severe burns.

Manciano, now at the Nevada State Prison in Carson City, is eligible for parole in May 2010.
