Letter: Desalination plant an overlooked option

Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005 | 10:42 a.m.

Las Vegas could install a desalination plant near Los Angeles, and deliver the product to Los Angeles in exchange for an equal amount from Southern California's share of the Colorado River.

This would eliminate billion-dollar pipelines and eliminate the ecological disaster that would result if we were to pump Northern Nevada dry. (Remember what happened after Los Angeles started pumping water from the Owens Valley in California.)

The technology is proven and ready. Desalination plants are operating successfully for countries around the Persian Gulf.

We in Las Vegas should wake up. This is win-win instead of lose-lose.
