Letter: Intelligent design explains complexity

Those of us who believe in intelligent design well understand the science of planetary movement, tides and the biology of cells. But no naturalistic science has ever satisfactorily explained the origin of these incredibly complex systems. Did they all just happen? Of course not, that's a fairy tale!

When we see a sophisticated, complex watch, computer or skyscraper, we realize there was an intelligent designer that designed them. It didn't just happen. How much more so with the unbelievably complex world we live in?

Not believing in intelligent design is like believing that if a hurricane went through a junkyard, a 747 would pop out! It defies all logic. I don't base my thinking on polls, but there is a reason why 75 percent of Americans think some sort of intelligent design should be taught in schools. It's simply intuitive.

Now what's this about religious people being anti-science education? The very impetus for modern science is the belief that God is rational, and has established rational rules for the way the universe works. Isaac Newton (a deeply committed Christan, by the way) said that science is "simply thinking God's thoughts after him."

People of faith, particularly Christians, have established and continue to support thousands of grammar and secondary schools, and colleges such as Harvard, Notre Dame and Baylor.

Mr. Goodman's sarcastic tone and name-calling simply show the weakness of his argument.
