Letter: Language letter strikes a chord

Fran Grizzuto's Oct. 13 letter in the Sun, "Why do we have to learn Spanish?" struck a responsive chord in me.
My father was born in The Netherlands and migrated to the USA at an early age. I went to a one-room school in a Midwest community where most settlers of German origin spoke that language at home, while my parents spoke Dutch.
At school we all learned English, as that was required -- no bilingual or multilingual education. So we all learned that language well -- the parents from the children in most cases.
Why do we need to continue a foreign language when we can all learn American English?
