Letter: Why do we have to learn Spanish?

When I came here from Italy, I had to learn English or pay the price for coming here and not knowing the language. If we wanted to come to America, we had to learn the American language ourselves or our friends and family would teach us.

I remember that anyone who came to America was able to take a lesson called "English as a Second Language." Now we are being forced to learn Spanish. Why don't schools require that every American learn Italian, Polish, German and so forth?

Many individuals are given driver's licenses and don't even know how to read or speak English. How can Nevada allow drivers on the road who can't speak or read the language? Can someone honestly answer that question?
