Editorial: Faltering federal protect plan
The bickering has continued inside the courtroom and out on the streets of Elko, where U.S. Forest Service officials have been shunned, ridiculed and threatened by locals who wanted to rebuild the 1 1/2-mile road that dead-ends in a wilderness area.
Brown bear climbs tree outside governor's office
Whatever the reason, a 300-pound brown bear climbed more than 40 feet up a tree outside the governor's office at the state capitol about 3:30 a.m. Friday. It remained perched there for two hours while sheriff's deputies and officials of the state wildlife department waited for it to descend.

Letter: Library, museum safe places to visit
The location of the facility has its detractors. Dan Romano, facilities manager for the Neon Museum, is quoted as suggesting "the neighborhood has a bad reputation" and that the library and children's museum "get the brunt of homeless people." Lied Museum board President-elect Peter Poggione concurs that the area's "rough image" is one reason the museum wants to move.

Washington County voters approved a referendum to build a $50 million casino and resort east of Riverside in September 2004. The development will include a 60,000-square-foot casino, 200-room hotel and an 18-hole golf course.
Checking out the real estate scene
About 400 people took the four-hour tour, in its 17th year, filling seven buses and viewing 94 properties. Most of the projects this year were office buildings, a big change from two years ago when most were industrial. Skyrocketing Las Vegas land costs are responsible for the change, a tour guide said, noting that office properties offer a greater return on investment.

You spell Nevada, they spell Navada
Nevadans are used to the constant mispronunciation of the state's name, but at least people can spell it right -- or can they?
New Orleans mayor pushes plan for new gambling district
"Now is the time for us to think out of the box. Now is the time for some bold leadership, some decisive leadership," Nagin said.
Duly noted
Just a little over a year ago, Brad Thompson's biggest concern was figuring out how to pitch to the middle of the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx batting order. On Tuesday, he found himself staring down the San Diego Padres lineup, which, come to think, is about the same thing.
Energy bill show differences
WASHINGTON -- In the aftermath of an explosive vote on energy legislation on the House floor Friday, two Nevada lawmakers were left with somewhat different perspectives. Depending on your political leanings, the bill will either raise or lower gasoline prices.
Editorial: Pets should not be forgotten
At the same time, thousands of displaced people in temporary shelters far from their hometowns are sick at heart for having had to abandon their beloved pets -- as per official policy. The buses evacuating people from the Superdome in New Orleans were off limits to pets. Rescue boats searching neighborhoods in the days after Katrina would take people but not their animals. Authorities later moving into the ravaged areas with rescue vehicles had the same attitude. Images on TV showed people with their pets, refusing to be rescued if it meant leaving them behind. The total disregard for people's ...

Editorial: Gas prices and the economy
So it got our attention when Las Vegas-based MRC Group Research Institute released a poll it conducted of Southern Californians about what effect escalating gasoline prices might have on their vacation plans. According to the survey done last month, 48 percent of the respondents said higher gasoline prices would deter them from vacationing in Las Vegas.
Letter: Police hires should increase, not just pay
As a county resident, I voted for the tax increase to hire new cops, not to feather the nest of the existing force. Call me greedy! I think they should get a raise, but not 25 percent over four years. Thanks to County Manager Thom Reilly for stepping in and saying, "No way." Let's get sensible with these greedy cops.
