Letter: Gay marriage claims are ludicrous

Friday, Oct. 7, 2005 | 8:08 a.m.

As for him not knowing whether he favors or opposes gay marriage, I again asked, "Why?" If you ask people their reasons for being against gay marriage you will get a variety of different responses. Some say the Bible is against it. Really? The Bible also says you should be stoned to death if you work on a Sunday or if you talk back to your parents, yet I see no conservative outrage on that.

Also, we have a separation of church and state in this country. Why should people force their relgious beliefs on others just because they believe it to be true?

Another common excuse is that allowing gay marriage will start America down a "slippery slope" that will allow people to marry their pets if they wanted to. Gay marriage is legal in Canada and Spain, along with many Scandinavian countries, and these ludicrous claims have led to no such legislation nor is there any support for them.

The fact is there are bigger problems facing America than people's choices in who they want to marry. Hopefully more people will open their eyes to this.
