No more halfway house applications being taken

The Las Vegas City Council on Wednesday closed the door on new applications for halfway houses for six months. It is hoping to give city staff enough time to review relevant city and state laws that are apparently not stopping new halfway houses from opening without proper approval.

The council also ordered a facility at 1904 Chapman Drive vacated after code enforcement officials reported the facility was being used as a church, halfway house and drug rehabilitation center despite not having approval from the city or the proper zoning.

City Councilman Lawrence Weekly, who asked for the moratorium, said unauthorized halfway houses "are all over the place" in his ward. The council voted 6-0 on both the moratorium and closing the Chapman Drive facility.

The council's action does not affect a pending application to reopen the former Clark Center building downtown as Fresh Start, a new halfway house for up to 100 former inmates and alcoholics, because that application is already in.
