Letter: Suicide awareness seriously lacking

Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005 | 8:26 a.m.

Suicide is a taboo subject in our society and tragically so. As a survivor of a loved one's suicide, I can attest to the fact that suicide has become the elephant in the room. Interventions are lacking, and then when a tragic suicide does occur, families and friends abandon those left behind or refuse to allow the survivor to talk about what happened or to grieve in their own time.

The tragedy of the person who dies becomes the tragedy as well of the person who lives. They travel a road understood by few and acknowledged by even fewer.

Thank you for printing this very important editorial and I hope that many will heed the call and participate in the suicide-awareness walk at UNLV on Saturday. I will be walking in the same event on Oct. 30 in San Francisco.
