The week ahead: From the gridiron to the lords of the ring
Monday, Oct. 3, 2005 | 8:43 a.m.
SATURDAY | NOON
San Diego State at UNLV, noon, Sam Boyd Stadium
While TCU and Wyoming will be knocking headgear in virtual anonymity (no TV) in what may turn out to be the game of the year in the Mountain West, the Aztecs (2-3) and Rebels (1-4) will be trying to keep what few fans show up to Sam Boyd Stadium entertained during a plethora of TV timeouts. At least San Diego State (2-3) is coming off an impressive victory, 31-10 against BYU. The Rebels (1-4), conversely, are coming off another non-impressive defeat, 42-17 at Wyoming. If you were an undergrad assigned a term paper on mediocrity, this would be a good place to start.
TV/RADIO: ESPN Plus, Cox cable channel 6/ESPN 920-AM. TICKETS: 739-FANS.
SATURDAY | BOXING
Diego Corrales vs. Jose Luis Castillo, TV undercard 6 p.m., Thomas & Mack Center
Their world lightweight unification battle royal here in May was widely recognized as "the epic battle of our time" by the boxing press. I would amend that to include the times of Gentleman Jim Corbett and John L. Sullivan as well. Corrales-Castillo I was so action-packed and the ebb and flow so unpredictable (Corrales got off the canvas twice to win in the 10th round) that it could have qualified for the script of "Rocky VI."
TV/RADIO: Showtime pay-per-view. TICKETS: 739-FANS.
FRIDAY-SUNDAY | SUMO WRESTLING
Grand Sumo Las Vegas, 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday/2 p.m. Sunday, Mandalay Bay Events Center
If giant men bumping bellies while wearing diapers is your cup of tea, then Mandalay Bay has just the event for you. Actually, the "diaper" is a silken loincloth called a (ital)mawahsi(end ital) but the men are indeed giant, and are considered some of Japan's most famous and noble sportsmen.
TV/RADIO: None. TICKETS: 632-7580.

FRIDAY
HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
Shadow Ridge at Cheyenne, 7 p.m.
The Shadow Ridge offense has disappeared like the sandwich in William Perry's lunchbox. Another loss would be a devasting blow to the playoff hopes of the team that many thought might run the table this season.
TV/RADIO: None.
