Police sting results in 440 traffic citations

Monday, Oct. 3, 2005 | 8:37 a.m.

North Las Vegas Police issued more than 440 citations to drivers who failed to stop for people in crosswalks in a series of pedestrian safety stings that wrapped up Friday.

Using a $20,000 state grant, the police department staged 10 stings, starting in June. Police dressed in plain clothes walked in crosswalks and drivers who failed to stop were pulled over by waiting traffic officers.

On Friday police walked crosswalks near the intersection of Civic Center Drive and Las Vegas Boulevard North.

They wrote 45 citations to motorists failing to stop for pedestrians in a marked crosswalk, eight to drivers failing to wear a seat belt and one ticket for failing to restrain a child.

Police said the pedestrian safety program is designed to inform the public of the pedestrian right-of-way laws through enforcement. Under state law, pedestrians "own" the sidewalk and vehicles in both directions must not enter a crosswalk when a person is walking through it.

Violating this law can result in a $190 ticket.
