Letter: Predictably, America remains unprepared

Why? The answer is the issue of predictability. Even with the several days that the port cities of Texas had in advance of Hurricane Rita's landfall, there was still death and destruction in Texas and a reflooding of New Orleans lowlands.

Political ideology may have its place in issues of national and international politics. It has no place, however, in situations such as those now faced by coastal Texas and Louisiana. As a matter of fact, using a disaster for political gain is perhaps the lowest a politician can sink, and that is saying a lot given the depths to which most of our politicians have reached in the eyes of the public.

Sooner or later, we shall have to come to accept that bad things happen to good people. It has always been that way, and shall continue to be so long after these two storms have become adistant memory.
