Feds file suit against state over moving companies

Monday, Oct. 3, 2005 | 8:38 a.m.

RENO -- A federal lawsuit filed Thursday challenges the state's authority to regulate charter buses and moving companies. The suit, filed by the Nevada Transportation Coalition and the Nevada Motor Transport Association, argues that federal law supersedes state law.

The coalition says the state has been looking into companies' records to judge their "business fitness." Sandra Avants, chairman of the state Transportation Services Authority, said this issue has been researched thoroughly and the agency's regulation of the industry is appropriate. The state looks at business records to prove that a company has the proper insurance.

The issue of state regulation over the industry has been contentious for years and came up during this year's legislative session. A bill that would have removed the state's authority over charter buses and moving companies failed.
