Nevada gets grant to fight prescription drug abuse

Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005 | 7:46 a.m.

Nevada has received a $340,298 grant to help crack down on prescription drug abuse.

The state will use the money in efforts to monitor potential prescription drug abuse.

Nevada was one of nine states to receive a grant, said Natalie Collins, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's office in Nevada.

The money will aid Nevada's existing prescription monitoring program, which began in 1997 and is handled by a subcommittee of the state Pharmacy Board.

The program is targeted at stopping people from "doctor shopping" and abusing powerful prescription medications such as OxyContin. When they find abuse, program officers talk to the doctors writing the prescriptions and refer the abusers to treatment.

The grant will also pay for public service announcements aimed at pre-teens and teenagers in Northern Nevada.
