Letter: Bush’s war on poverty starts too late

Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005 | 9:11 a.m.

While tax breaks for the wealthy are still the Bush priority, the United States slips further behind other countries in many categories. Due to insufficient prenatal care for the poor, our country ranks 36th in infant mortality among industrialized nations. If you were born in one of 23 other countries you could expect to live up to five years longer because health care is more accessible to all citizens of those countries.

Our president's misguided priorities and poor decisions are bankrupting America. While his friends and cronies feed off the riches of America, the poor fall further and further behind. Let's hope his war on poverty is better than his war on terror.
