Editorial: Water too precious to waste
In 2002, water use amounted to 500,000 acre-feet (one acre-foot is enough for a family of five for a year). After moderate water restrictions were adopted by Clark County and municipal jurisdictions, the use dropped to 465,000 acre-feet by last year, despite heavy population growth. This trend of using less water every year was hoped to continue for some time. But the Southern Nevada Water Authority is projecting that, if anything, water use for 2005 will have increased over 2004.
Editorial: A tale of two cities
The Las Vegas Sun reported this week that a California-based consultant, which the city hired to audit its operations, made 97 recommendations for improving the city's leadership and management. They included adding staff and keeping the offices open five days a week, rather than four.
Columnist Tom Gorman: On Knowing all things Liberace
Oh my, if the girls back in California could see Nedra now.
Letter: Church, state must be separated
As she suggests, Founding Father Tom Paine's "Age of Reason" is perhaps the clearest, most common sense refutation of the self-serving, cultish, myth-based entities masquerading as "God's" spokespeople. Enough with the snake oil salesmen.
'Plaid Tidings' good holiday fit
"Plaid Tidings," the Christmas version of the popular musical "Forever Plaid," is a perfect show to get you into the mood for the holidays.
Letter: No way that intelligent design is science
Mr. Chambers did a valuable service in clarifying what for too many people is a point of deep confusion about evolution and natural selection: that they are not interchangeable concepts. One is an observed fact, well-noted in nature and the lab; the other is a scientific theory explaining that fact (which it does quite well, and therefore has become the foundation of modern biology).
Colin doesn't make mockery of LV comedy
As a rule, marine biology is not the route you take to become a comedian.
Arts Notes: Exhibit honors early LV residents
No Bugsy. No Howard. No Frank Sinatra.
Columnist Jeff German: The Walters mess, and the fight between cabbies and limo drivers
Attorney General George Chanos is learning a couple of political lessons the hard way.
Letter: Be sure to keep the 'ignorant' informed
This brilliant mind should be able to accomplish this feat and be back in Las Vegas to lead the poor uneducated people of Nevada before Christmas. Please teach the ignorant people of this great country how to read the minds of our leaders and how to recognize half-truths. Oh, how I am looking forward to his leadership here in Nevada and in Washington -- he cannot possibly leave it to others as they are ignorant of the facts and cannot be trusted to make sound judgments on our nation's behalf.
Panel examines post-fight treatment options
When Leavander Johnson and Martin Sanchez suffered head injuries during boxing matches in Las Vegas this year, both were transported to area hospitals and subsequently died.
Columnist Jeff Haney: On the Value in picking a Super Bowl
Is it too late in the NFL season to find value in the Las Vegas odds on which team will win the Super Bowl?
Schiff case spurs rash of threats
Supporters of anti-tax advocate Irwin Schiff have allegedly threatened a federal judge who presided over the case and are suspected of damaging Internal Revenue Service vehicles in a campaign of intimidation against officials.
Tark still holding court
Jerry Tarkanian led UNLV to the NCAA national basketball championship in 1990 and forged a sterling 509-105 record in 19 seasons as Rebels coach.
Editorial: Deadlines unfair to evacuees
Nevada is among 10 states where most of the evacuees landed. There are still about 730 families in hotel and motel rooms here, and another 46,000 families are sharing rooms in the other nine states. We agree with the Federal Emergency Management Agency that such housing, the most expensive on the market, is not feasible for the long term.
Same story, different version?
It was an exciting opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a promising pharmaceutical company. Or so Carole Aronin thought.
New boom expected soon for LV malls
The race is on to see who can build a new mall first.
