Letter: Thanks to veterans not too little, but a bit late
Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2005 | 9:26 a.m.
Having just finished riding in the Veterans Day parade and working at Nellis Air Force Base's Aviation Nation air show, I was touched by the outpouring of thanks from our community. I can't count the number of people who came up and thanked me and said, "welcome home." The only problem is that even with my long career in the Air Force, I am not a Vietnam vet; I was too young.
But what I still can't get past is the tokenism of the theme of the entire weekend, "Operation Welcome Home" or saying "Welcome home to America's Vietnam Veterans." Where do you think these veterans have been for the past 30 years? Lost in space? No, our Vietnam vets have been home raising families, living and working in our communities.
It seems to me that a more appropriate theme should have been "We were a bunch of ignorant doofuses who never bothered to thank our Vietnam vets for doing what their country asked them to do."
The reality is that the Vietnam vets did what they did with valor and honor.
