Letter: Longtime residents being shortchanged
Saturday, Nov. 12, 2005 | 9:13 a.m.
The Sun is to be commended for keeping the issue of affordable housing, especially in reference to mobile home parks, before the public.
Thousands are being forced out by sale or conversion, taken over by eminent domain. Progress is understandable, but many of the residents -- who have lived in the same place for decades -- are given short shrift, without sufficient remuneration.
Laws need to be changed to balance profit with public need. Residents affected by city or business expansion should be compensated punitively as well as for their property. The city and county commissioners should prioritize reform of this policy of economic sanction, and commit to developing choices in housing that accommodate and protect the oldest and neediest of us.
